Outdoor recreation has always been a central part of my life. These days I mostly focus on hiking and backpacking. This is the gear I like.
Cascade Carbon Fiber Hiking Poles – These are by far the best value in hiking pole I’ve ever come across. I paid around $30 for them at Costco. They’re now over $40, but still well worth it. Cork grips, carbon fiber shafts, quick release adjustments, and a vareity of tips. You just can’t beat them!
High Stream Collapsible Poles – These are my “travel poles”. They collapse down to 15″ long, and even come with their own case (one for each pole) so you can stick them in your pack or luggage without worry about tearing fabrics. An overall excellent pole for the money.
Topo Terraventure 2 Trail running Shoes – Those these are advertised as “trail runners”, it’s my go-to shoe for all my day hikes and backpacking. I have a narrow foot, and I found Altras – another popular choice – to be too wide. The Terraventures have great traction, firmly grab your foot, and have a “drop heel” that gives you better stability on the trail.
Gregory Baltoro 65 Backpack – This is my favorite backpack. I may get something lighter as I move toward ultralight backpacking. But the Baltoro is an incredible pack. It has lots of room, carries well, and has a large access pocket that makes getting to stuff easy. It also has a large exterior pocket that is great for carrying wet gear.
